The No. 3 Lindenwood women's lacrosse team went 4-0 over the weekend at the A-Town Throwndown in Athens, Ga. The Lady Lions outscored its opposition by nearly 10 goals a game while they picked up victories over No. 11 Colorado State, No. 9 Georgia, No. 10 Florida and Minnesota.
On Friday evening, Lindenwood reached double-figure wins for the season with a 10-4 victory over Colorado State. The contest was a defensive struggle, with Lindenwood leading just 3-2 at halftime. The Lady Lions were able to pull away though in the final 30 minutes.
Offensively,
Justiene Groothuis led the team with five goals, and
Laura Boland also had a pair.
Kathryn St. George led the team with nine groundballs, and
Christie Mearns had four saves in goal.
Eleni Papadakos was 11-of-15 on draws to help Lindenwood control the action for much of the night.
Saturday, the Lady Lions dominated defensively versus Georgia in a 16-5 win. Lindenwood did not allow a goal in the first half and Georgia only scored once against Mearns, who made eight saves before leaving the game.
Lacey Vatland led the offense with four goals, and Boland had three goals and two assists. Groothuis had a second hat trick in as many games and
Ashley Bruce netted two goals. Other scores came from
Jackie Henke, St. George, Papadakos, and
Meghan Chase. Papadakos continued to win the majority of draws, going eight-for-13.
In Sunday's first game, Lindenwood won 14-4 over Florida. Vatland led the team with five goals, and Groothuis and Bruce each added three. Boland had a pair and St. George scored the final tally. Mearns made four saves as she played the complete game in goal. Bruce had six groundballs and St. George had five.
In Lindenwood's final game at the event, it defeated Minnesota by a 15-3 score. The defense was again the top story as Means made three saves in 40 minutes, and
Christina Corcoran came off the bench to make two saves in 20 minutes. Vatland, Bruce, and Chase all had three goals, and Boland added two more to her season total.
Lindenwood extended its winning streak to 12 games and the team is 13-1 on the year. The Lady Lions return to action on April 8-11 at the Lindenwood Invitational.
