The Lady Lions lacrosse team saw its 14-game winning streak and its shot at the No. 1 national ranking come to a halt on Saturday afternoon at Hunter Stadium. In a battle between the top two ranked teams in the WDIA, No. 2 Lindenwood lost to No. 1 Santa Clara by an 11-5 score.
The Broncos showed why they are ranked first in the country by scoring six straight goals to go up 6-1 early in the game. The Lady Lions fought back to get within two at 6-4 by halftime. In the second-half, the two squads opened by trading goals, but Santa Clara scored the final four tallies for a six-goal victory.
Santa Clara won by shutting down Lindenwood's high scoring offense, limiting the Lady Lions to their lowest offensive total of the season. The Broncos were also just the third team to score double-digit goals versus the Lady Lions.
Justiene Groothuis led Lindenwood with two goals and two assists. Other goals came from
Laura Boland,
Kathryn St. George, and
Jackie Henke. Goalkeeper
Christie Mearns made nine saves in the contest.
Lindenwood falls to 15-2 overall on the season. The Lady Lions will look to get back in the win column in their final regular season game on Sunday at 1 p.m. versus Central Florida.
