Women's Lacrosse Wins WCLL Title For Second Straight Year

The Lindenwood women's lacrosse team won the 2010 WCLL Tournament in thrilling fashion on Sunday with a late goal in a 10-9 victory over Michigan. The tournament title was the second for the Lady Lions in two years in the league. 

Lindenwood trailed or was tied for 59:50 of the 60 minute game. Its only lead came with 10 seconds remaining when Lacey Vatland beat the Michigan goalie for the Lady Lions' 10th goal of the game.
Vatland led the team with half of its goals in the championship contest. Laura Boland and Kathryn St. George each had two goals and Justiene Groothuis had the final score. 

Defensively, Christie Mearns made 12 saves in goal and Vatland, Groothuis, and Ashley Bruce all had three groundballs. Eleni Papadakos led the team in draws by winning 12-of-18. 

Lindenwood reached the championship game with a 13-6 first-round victory over Toledo and an 18-8 semifinal win over Michigan State. 

In the Toledo contest, the Lady Lions put the game away early with a 10-2 advantage in the first half. Bruce scored three times, and Vatland, St. George, and Meghan Chase all had two goals. Christie Mearns made two saves in goal and Caitlin Erickson had three stops. Vatland, Bailey Segboer, and Jackie Henke all had team-highs with five groundballs.

Versus Michigan State, a trio of Lady Lions scored hat tricks. Boland scored three and also led the team with five groundballs. Vatland and St. George also scored three times, and Groothuis and Henke scored two goals apiece. Mearns made seven saves in goal and Bruce led Lindenwood with two assists. 

Lindenwood improves to 19-2 on the season and earns the conference's automatic bid to the national tournament.
