The No. 2 Lindenwood women's lacrosse team showed no signs of looking ahead to its showdown with No. 1 Santa Clara as the Lady Lions defeated No. 13 Michigan by a 16-8 score on Friday night at Hunter Stadium.
Lindenwood never trailed in the game as it jumped out to a 4-1 lead. The Wolverines got within one at 6-5 but the Lady Lions scored three times in the final five minutes of the half to go into the break with a 9-5 advantage.
In the second half, Michigan won the first part as it cut the lead to 10-7. Lindenwood dominated the end of the game though, outscoring the visitors 6-1 for the final 15:19 of the game.
Lacey Vatland led Lindenwood with five goals and six points. A night after scoring seven goals,
Justiene Groothuis played the playmaker role with four assists, and she also scored twice.
Kathryn St. George and
Laura Boland each had three goals,
Ashley Bruce had two goals and two assists, and
Bailey Segboer scored once.
Lindenwood improves to 15-1 with the victory. The Lady Lions will have their biggest regular season game in school history on Saturday when they host Santa Clara at 4 p.m.
