The Lindenwood field hockey team let a one goal lead slip away Saturday afternoon. The visiting Wittenberg Tigers scored twice in a span of five minutes during the second half to defeat the Lady Lions 3-2.
Wittenberg opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Boo Vernon scored after a scramble in front of the net. In the closing seconds of the first half, Lindenwood was awarded a penalty corner. With no time on the clock,
Lauren Cato fired a pass to
Lynsey Porter who scored from the top of the circle to even the score.
The Lady Lions controlled tempo early in the second half. After missing on several scoring opportunities, Cato scored off miss shot by
Haley McCulloch to give Lindenwood a 2-1 lead.
Lindenwood continued to control tempo, but a goal by Wittenberg's Elizabeth Dwyer at the 56th minute tied the game at two. Moments later, Vernon took a pass on the right side and scored the game winner in the back left-corner of the net.
Julianne Sutton took the loss, stopping two shots. Lindenwood outshot the Tigers 17-12, and held a 8-2 advantage in penalty corners, but struggled to convert on its scoring opportunities.
Lindenwood (2-4) will host Trine tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
