Lady Lions Conclude Season with Win over Liberty in Penalty Strokes

The Lindenwood field hockey team wrapped up its 2011 season with a penalty-stroke victory against Liberty on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Lions won the match, outscoring the Flames 3-2 in penalty strokes after the teams were tied 1-1 through regulation and two overtime periods.

The scoring began in the 22nd minute, when Alex Hibbs of the Liberty Flames put her team out in front with a goal on a penalty stroke. Liberty outshot Lindenwood 12-1 in the opening half and maintained a 7-3 penalty corner advantage, but only managed to get one goal.

The second half was also controlled by the Flames. They outshot the Lady Lions 3-1 and had eight penalty corners compared to zero for Lindenwood. But the Lady Lions never gave up, and broke through in the final eight seconds, when Julianne Sutton scored the tying goal, with an assist from Kundai Musarurwa. Sutton is the team's backup goalkeeper, but was forced to play in the field when two Lindenwood players went down with injuries.

Neither team scored in the overtime periods. Liberty won seven penalty corners in the two overtime periods, while Lindenwood won two. The Flames outshot the Lady Lions 7-4 in the extra sessions as well.

With the game still tied, the two teams went into a penalty strokeoff. Liberty shot first, scoring on its first two attempts. Lindenwood missed its first shot, but Erin de Jesus started a streak of three straight makes for the Lady Lions, including scores by Kundai Nangati and Kundai Musarurwa. The Flames missed their third shot wide right, and Samantha Brown saved the fourth and fifth attempts by Liberty to give Lindenwood its second win of the season.

Brown played the entire 115 minutes between the pipes for the Lady Lions, making 13 saves.

With the season-ending win, Lindenwood moves to 2-13 and concludes the year on a positive note.
