The Lindenwood Lions baseball team swept a doubleheader against No. 1 Oklahoma City Saturday afternoon in St. Charles. The Lions won game one in extra innings 4-3 and game two 10-9.
The Lions jumped out to an early lead in game one. Adam Peacock led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on a perfectly performed hit-and-run with Mike Moore. With runners at first and second Shelby Anderson smoked a ball over the centerfielder's head for a double, scoring both runners and giving the Lions a 2-0 lead. Anderson then advanced to third on a passed ball and was driven in by a Crispin Tarango sacrifice fly.
The Stars got on the scoreboard in the third inning after the Lions committed an error and threw a wild pitch. Oklahoma City scored another single tally in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-2 heading into the home half of the fifth inning.
Oklahoma City tied the contest up in the top of the sixth after Julien Pollard drove in Matt Presley on a looping liner over the second baseman's head.
The game headed into the bottom of the seventh tied. Lindenwood loaded the bases with just one out. Tarango had the first shot at being the hero, but popped up to the second baseman. Daniel Sandello then came to the plate and struck out sending the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, the Stars went down in order. The first two hitters in the Lions eighth went down in order. Next to the plate was freshman Matt Tellor, who was pitch hitting. On a 1-0 pitch Tellor deposited the delivery over the left field wall for the walk-off win.
Zac Pearman started on the hill for the Lions and got the no decision after throwing 5 1/3. He struck out one and surrendered two earned runs. Cory Trudell pitched the final two innings and got his sixth win of the season.
Anderson led the way at the plate going one for three with three RBIs. Zach Loraine chipped in with two hits of his own.
The Lions got on the board first in the second game also. Tarango drove in Anderson from second base with a double down the left field line. Oklahoma City came right back in the top of the second scoring three runs on three hits.
The Stars lead did not last long. In the bottom of the second the Lions scored seven runs on seven hits. Lindenwood sent 11 hitters to the plate and Loraine had two single in the inning.
Oklahoma City battled back and got within a run in the fourth when the team brought across four runs. The Lions got two of the runs back in the bottom half of the fourth and led 10-7 heading into the fifth.
The top of the sixth saw the Stars score two and get within one run setting up the seventh inning with the Lions leading by one. Trudell was on the hill for the Lions to try and shut the door. After walking the leadoff hitter he sat down the next three hitters for his fourth save of the year.
Leading the way at the plate in the second game was Loraine who went three for three with three RBIs. Anderson also chipped in with three hits and drove in a run.
With the two game sweep over the Stars the Lions move their overall record to 26-16. The two teams will close out the weekend series Sunday afternoon at 11 a.m. in St. Charles
