The No. 18 Lindenwood men's lacrosse team defeated No. 19 Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Hunter Stadium in the championship game of the GRLC Tournament. It took double overtime before the Lions prevailed by a 9-8 score.
Lindenwood controlled the contest for three quarters as it had a 7-3 lead going into the fourth quarter. Illinois' offense came alive though as it scored five times in the final quarter and the game went into overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, Will DelGrosso scored in the second overtime to give the Lions their seventh conference crown since 2003.
Josh Arras,
Jordan McKay, and
Tyler Davis all recorded two goals and one assist in the game. Other goals came from
Andrew Peterson and
Greg Cameron.
Dan Ashlock made 15 saves in goal, while Rick Wilson collected 16 faceoffs victories and had a team-high six groundballs. DelGrosso also had four groundballs to go along with his game winning goal.
With the victory, Lindenwood earns an automatic berth to the national championship tournament. The Lions will take a 16-6 overall record into that event which begins on May 17.
