Box Score The Lindenwood women's lacrosse team picked up its biggest victory of the season on Sunday afternoon in Denver, Colo. The Lady Lions defeated Regis, the defending WILA Champions, by a 14-13 score in double overtime.
Lindenwood never trailed in the contest but it had trouble putting away a stubborn Regis squad. The Lady Lions led 9-5 at halftime and took a 10-5 lead less than six minutes into the second half. Regis fought back though with five straight goals to tie the game. Lindenwood regained the advantage with two goals, but Regis answered with two of its own, including the tying goal with nine seconds left in regulation.
In the first overtime, Lindenwood struck first on a
Kathryn St. George goal. Once again, the Rangers answered late, this time scoring with four seconds left to force a second overtime period. Finally, in sudden victory play,
Melissa Menchella earned a free-position shot for the Lady Lions and ended the game just 1:35 into the second overtime. The goal was her first shot of the contest.
Lindenwood led most of the statistical categories, including a 27-22 advantage in shots and a 20-9 lead in groundballs. The Lady Lions were also 15-of-16 on clears, compared to seven-of-14 for Regis. The Rangers made up for those numbers by scoring eight free-position shots, compared to just two for Lindenwood.
The Lady Lions received a balanced scoring effort with three players, St. George,
Lindsey Palmer, and
Kara Cashen, scoring three goals apiece.
Lexi Crusha added two goals, and
Justiene Groothuis and
Jordyn Constance both had one goal and one assist.
Defensively,
Christine Hehmeyer earned her sixth win of the season after making eight saves in nearly 68 minutes in goal. St. George forced four turnovers and led the team with five groundballs. Groothuis had a team-high three draw controls for the Lady Lions.
Lindenwood improves to 6-2 on the season and it is now in first place in the conference with a 2-0 WILA mark. The team is now off until an April 6 contest at 7 p.m. at home against Fort Lewis.
