Cycling Finishes in Third Place Tie at USA Cycling Road Nationals

Lindenwood cycling finished in a third place tie at the USA Cycling Division 1 Collegiate Road National Championships May 3-5 in Ogden, Utah.  The Lions earned a total of 345 team points, the same amount as Fort Lewis College, but stood in the fourth place position on the final podium due to a tie breaker.  Marian University claimed the championship at the Friday through Sunday event, followed by the University of Colorado-Boulder in second place.

Lindenwood was helped by Brandon Feehery, who claimed multiple podium spots over the three days of competition.  He finished the Men’s Criterium in fourth place, then took 28th in the road race which earned third in the Men’s Overall Omnium.  Feehery was also part of the Lion’s team that claimed second place in the Men’s Time Trial on a course in Antelope Island State Park on Friday.  Members included Devin Clark, Matt Brandt and Clayton Omer, as well as Feehery.

In other action on May 3, the Lady Lions team of Ashley James, Lindsey Durst, Rachel Byus and Amber Vredenburg rode to the last spot on the podium in fifth in the Women’s Time Trial event.

In the women’s Criterium on Saturday, Byus posted the top result for Lindenwood in 11th place.  Ashley Rethemeyer was 24th, James 27th and Durst 41st.  A crash-filled Men’s Criterium claimed most of the Lions in the last couple laps.  Aside from the third place finish from Feehery, Daniel Williams was the only other Lindenwood rider to finish, taking 50th place.  Clark and Omer were knocked out in crashes.

The final day of competition on Sunday brought the road races which included a course that wrapped through the canyons and mountains near Ogden, Utah.  In the Women’s Road Race, Durst was the highest Lady Lion, finishing 20th.  James and Sarah Lukas took 40th and 41st respectively, Tiana Row was 54th, and Vredenburg 58th.  Johnathan Freter posted an impressive eighth place finish in the Men’s Road Race for Lindenwood.  Riding in a group that crossed the line together, Brandt took 26th, Feehery 28th, and Clark 30th.  Cruise Bogedin was 40th

The top four Overall Team Omnium finish was the best performance at Road Nationals in the history of the Lindenwood cycling program.  The 2013 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships included roughly 400 competitors from over 100 different schools.
