The Lindenwood women's swimming and diving program had a very successful time at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Championships in Rochester, Minn. The Lady Lions finished second as a team, which was a big improvement over last year's fifth-place performance. Lindenwood won eight individual titles and two relays at the competition.
The Lady Lions finished with 1388 points as a team, coming up 30 points shy of conference champion St. Cloud State. Those two teams dominated the rest of the field with Minnesota State Moorhead coming in third with 909.5 points, Minnesota State collecting 862.5, Northern State having 517, and Nebraska-Kearney finishing with 308.
Alecia McGillivray was named the NSIC Swimmer of the Meet and also earned NSIC Freshman of the Year honors. Head coach
Jason Owen was named the NSIC co-Coach of the Year.
Alecia McGillivray led Lindenwood by winning three individual titles and being a part of one of the winning relays. She took home titles in the 500 free, 1000 free, and 400 IM. Other individual titles have come from
Bethany Steffes in the 200 free,
Audra Thornton in the 200 IM,
Lena Kirchner in the 1650 free, and Maike Tweesmann in the 100 free. Lindenwood won two relay events in the 200 free relay and 800 free relay.
Thirteen Lady Lions earned all-conference honors. The swimmers earning that award are: Aly Coleman,
Storrie Cramer,
Niki Dahl, Kirchner, McGillivray, MacKenzie Porter, Natlie Rembisz, Steffes, Thornton,
Kyleigh Troxel, Tweesman,
Hannah Vinyard, and
Jocelyn Woo.
Day One Recap
Lindenwood dominated the final individual event of the day of the 1000 freestyle. The Lady Lions captured five of the top six places in the competition. McGillivray won the race in a time of 10:11.15. Two of her teammates finished close behind as Troxel was second (10:15.17) and Vinyard was third (10:25.24).
Lena Kirchner (10:30.49) and
Natalie Rembisz (10:31.32) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Lady Lions also won the individual title in the 200 IM as Thornton won with a school-record time of 2:05.90. Tweesman finished fifth with a mark of 2:09.83. Cramer came in seventh, Woo was 11th, and
Kelsey Hutton was 17th.
In the 50 free, Dahl and MacKenzie Porter reached the A-finals. Dahl came in fourth with a time of 24.40, and Porter was fifth with a 24.60. Also scoring in that event were
Bethany Steffes in eighth and
Daniela Davila Gallego was 18th.
The only relay of the day was the 200 medley relay. Lindenwood's top team of Woo, Cramer, Tweesmann, and Dahl earned all-conference with a second-place finish in a time of 1:45.39. That mark set a new school standard. The Lady Lions' B-team came in seventh.
Day Two Recap
Lindenwood started the final session of day two out right by winning the first two events. The 200 free relay was up first and the team of Dahl, Thornton, Porter, and Steffes won in a time of 1:36.06, just 0.24 seconds ahead of St. Cloud State.
In the first individual race of the evening, McGillivray won her second title by finishing first in the 400 IM with a mark of 4:27.33. Also in the top final flight was Thornton who finished third (4:31.83), and Troxel who finished sixth (4:40.29). Other Lady Lions to score were
Kelsey Hutton in seventh-place and Aly Coleman in 13
th.
Lindenwood had two swimmers in the top finals of the 100 fly. Tweesmann came in fourth with a time of 57.61 and Woo was fifth with a time of 58.18.
The Lady Lions' final title of the night came in the 200 free where Steffes won with a time of 1:54.43. Vinyard was fifth in the race with a mark of 1:55.79. Other Lindenwood swimmers to score were Kirchner in seventh, Davila Gallego in eighth, Rembisz in 10
th, and
Morgan Connors in 13
th.
In the final event of the night, the 400 medley relay team captured a second-place finish. The squad of Woo, Cramer, Tweesmann, and Steffes had a time of 3:54.53.
Day Three Recap
Lindenwood won half of the events on day three of the conference championships but St. Cloud State, which trailed by 50 points entering the day, outscored the Lady Lions by 60 points to take over the team lead.
McGillivray won her third individual title by winning the 500 free with a time of 5:01.00. Four other Lady Lions were in the top finals of that event as Troxel finished third, Kirchner was fourth, and Rembisz was sixth. Other Lady Lions scoring in that event were Hutton in 12
th, Davila Gallego in 14
th, and Church in 18
th.
The 100 back was the event that helped St. Cloud State get back into the team race as it scored 88 points, compared to just 18 for Lindenwood. Woo finished eighth overall and Porter was 14
th.
In the 100 breast, Cramer led Lindenwood with a third-place finish, while Coleman was fifth.
Kelsey Nettles also scored with her 15
th-place finish.
Vinyard was the only Lady Lion to score in the 200 fly, but she scored the maximum amount of points by winning the event. She swam a 2:03.37 and won by over a second.
The first diving competition took place and
Carleen Wayne led Lindenwood with a fourth-place showing in the final.
Shelby Werkema came in seventh and
Samantha Brady was 12th.
The final event of the day was the 800 free relay and Lindenwood won with a time of 7:39.06. That relay consisted of Tweesmann, McGillivray, Steffes, and Thornton.
Day Four Recap
Lindenwood opened the final day by winning the top three slots in the 1650 free competition, Kirchner won the event with a time of 17:29.40, just 0.10 seconds ahead of teammate Troxel.
Natalie Rembisz was third with a time of 17:41.34. Also scoring in the event was
Kelsey Hutton in sixth.
Tweesmann made it back-to-back titles for Lindenwood as she won the next event in the 100 free. She swam a time of 52.51 and touched the wall just 0.05 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Thornton came in fourth and Vinyard was fifth in the top finals heat. Steffes came in seventh, Dahl was 10
th, Davila Gallego was 12
th, and Connors was 13
th.
The next event turned out to be the turning point of the championships as St. Cloud State scored 120 points in the 200 back. Lindenwood's McGillivray led the team with a fifth-place showing, and Wood came in eighth in that event.
In the 200 breaststroke, Coleman earned runner-up honors with a 2:19.89 time. Cramer finished fourth and Nettles was 15
th.
In the final diving competition, Wayne finished fourth with a score of 384.80, and Brady was 12
th.
The event ended with the 400 free relay. Lindenwood's top squad of McGillivray, Porter, Thornton, and Tweesmann finished second with a time of 3:30.30. That relay missed winning a conference title by just 0.05 seconds.
