For the third straight season, the men's water polo team won the title in the Missouri Valley Division with two wins October 24-25 at the Washington University Natatorium in St. Louis, Mo. The Lions earned a 30-10 victory against Missouri and then stopped Washington University 19-7.
In the first game of the weekend against the Tigers on Saturday, Toni Storic led the offense with 10 goals and two ejections drawn. Jesse Frazier scored six times, Alvaro Castro had four goals, Aleksander Cukic netted three, Marc Tahull and Alex Beltrol scored twice each, and Andrew Rabe had a single tally.
After a slower start against the Bears on Sunday, Lindenwood took a 4-2 lead after the first quarter, then finished with much stronger play the final three quarters. Storic was once again the offensive force with eight goals. Diego Aldea hit the cage three times, Castro, Javier Platero, and Brian Kaestner each scored twice, and Cukic and Tahull added single tallies.
With the two wins, the Lions improved to 14-1 overall and will take a 10 game winning streak into the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division I Club Championship November 13-15 in Santa Cruz, Calif. They'll enter as the number one seed as they attempt to defend their national title from 2014.
In other action from the Missouri Valley Division, the Lindenwood B squad posted two wins, defeating Missouri 20-13 and taking down Saint Louis University 22-13. Enrique Donsel led the Lions in the game against the Tigers with five goals. Eduardo Ariste, Bret Lundstrom, and Jarod Lawson each scored three. Goiko Milutinovic had two, and Curro Casado, Tyler Sanfilippo, and Jacob Jagodzinski each had one. After a furious start in the second game against the Billikens for third place, Lindenwood B built a seven goal lead and pulled away from there. Sillero again led the way with seven goals, and Ariste, Lundstrum, and Casado each had three. Jagodinkski scored twice and Sanfilippo and Milutinovic each had a single goal.
