The No. 1 ranked Lions won their second straight Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Men's Collegiate Club national title with a 9-5 victory over No. 3 ranked University of Southern California Sunday afternoon at the Trees Hall Fitness Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Lindenwood goaltender
Marcel Farres was a human wall as he made 16 saves in the game to help the Lions hoist the trophy.
The Trojans took a lead in the first 90 seconds of the opening quarter, but Lindenwood countered with two tallies to build a 2-1 lead at the end of the first. USC wasted little time in the second quarter to even the match at two, but once again, the Lions responded, this time with three straight goals. The first came on a penalty shot and the next two at even strength. Southern Cal took advantage of a Lindenwood penalty to score a man-up marker, but the Lions held a 5-3 lead at halftime.
The third quarter and moments prior to the fourth proved key in the game as Lindenwood held USC scoreless for the opening seven minutes of the second half while adding two goals to the ledger to make it 7-3. During the break, the Trojans lost a player to a red card for the rest of the contest and it seemed to affect their offensive flow. The Lions took advantage a minute into the final quarter to make it 8-3. Southern Cal did cut the deficit to 8-5 with a man-up shot early in the fourth and even strength play with 1:22 remaining, but Lindenwood added the final blow to seal the win with just 15 seconds on the clock.
Seven different Lions scored in a balanced offensive attack, led by
Ratimir Babic and
Mateo Lema with two each.
Marino Chorro,
Andres Miranda,
Nikola Vukic,
Jamie Gambin, and
Marc Tahull each added single markers. Lindenwood scored three times on 11 man-advantage chances while holding the Trojans to three goals on eight opportunities.
With the title, the Lions tie Cal Poly State University for the most CWPA Men's Collegiate Club championships at five, all coming in the last six years. Prior to 2019, Lindenwood hoisted the trophy in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018.
After the championship game, the All-Tournament Team, Most Valuable Player, and Coach of the Tournament awards were announced. Farres and Tahull earned First Team selection while Chorro received Second Team selection.
The Lions complete the 2019 campaign with an overall record of 21-6. They posted a perfect 10-0 mark to win their eighth straight Missouri Valley Division championship and 13
th overall having won in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.
