Women's SD Records Program-Best Fifth-Place Finish at Nationals; Men Earn Seventh

The women's previous-high mark was ninth place last season. The men earned second place each of the past two years.

The Lindenwood women's swimming and diving team earned a program-best fifth-place finish at the NCAA National Championships on Saturday night in Birmingham, Ala. at the NCAA Division II Winter Festival, while the men's team finished seventh after being the runner-up for two-consecutive years. The women's team tallied 212 points, 36 behind Nova Southeastern and 11 ahead of West Florida. The men finished with 175 points as a team, just 23 behind Wingate and 15 ahead of conference-rival Delta State. 

Overall the women secured 10 All-Americans while the men had eight swimmer earn the distinction. Both the men's and women's squad had three members earn honorable-mention status.

Serghei Golban won the only event for Lindenwood over the past four days. The junior won the 50 free with a time of 19.53, while he finished second in the 100 back after touching the wall in 46.89. The Moldova native also placed eighth in the 200 medley relay team, earning All-American honors in three events. Alex Leff anchored the relay team to be named an All-American, whole Joey Martin and Kian Quigley also earned top honors. 

Cristian Vasquez was named an All-American for the second time in his career after a pair of top-five finishes. The sophomore placed fourth in the 200 fly with a time of 1:46.57, while finishing fifth in the 400 IM. The native from Spain was also part of the 800 free relay team that earned 13th place. Haoning Chen and Gustavo Silva Santa also earned an honorable-mention nod as part of the team. 

Senior Felix Eigel was named an All-American for the third time in his career after finishing seventh in the 400 IM and eighth in the 200 back. Freshmen Matheus Isidro and Joao Silveira were part of the 400 medley relay team that placed eighth to be named All-Americans. Ross Watson earned honorable-mention status as a junior after being named an All-American a season ago. 

Simone de Rijcke was part of four top-eight finishes in Birmingham. The Lindenwood newcomer earned seventh place in the 200 free as an individual before earning eighth place in the 400 medley relay and 400 free relay. The Netherlands native also placed seventh in the 800 free relay. Sophomore Morgan Fischer and freshman Kamila Kunka were named All-Americans for the first time in their respective careers after being part of the 800 free relay team. Kate Stauffer was also part of the 200 free relay team, being named an All-American a season after earning honorable-mention honors. 

Bethany Steffes, who was part of the 800 free relay team to finish eighth, was also a member of the fourth-place 200 free relay, seventh-place 200 medley relay, and eight-place 400 free relay teams. This is the second time Steffes has earned All-American honors in her four-year career. Hannah Vinyard was named an All-American for the third-straight year after placing seventh in the 200 fly as an individual. The senior also was part of the 400 medley relay team that placed eighth, and earning 14th in the 100 fly. 

Ewa Dymarek was named an All-American for the first time since her freshman season with a seventh-place and eighth-place finish in the 200 medley relay 400 medley relay, respectively. The junior also earned 13th in the 100 back and 14th in the 200 breast. Ola Tomala was also part of the relay teams with Dymarek, but the freshman also earned ninth place in the 100 back and 13th place in the 200 back. 

Abby Maricle and Kinga Lesinska were part of the seventh-place 200 free relay team, while the former also swam as part of the 200 medley relay and the latter was part of the 400 free relay. Alecia McGillivray was an honorable-mention swimmer in the 400 IM, while Lena Kirchner was an honorable-mention performer for the second time in her career with her finish in the 200 fly. 

Shelby Werkema finished 11th in the 1m dive event, being an honorable-mention All-American for the second time in her career.

After taking ninth place in 2016, the women's team earned a fifth-place finish to set a program record for highest finish at the NCAA National Championships. The men earned seventh to record their third-highest finish in Lindenwood's NCAA era. The men's and women's teams conclude their seasons after each winning their respective NSISC title in Cleveland, Miss. The conference championship was the first for the women in the NCAA era, while the men earned their third overall and second NSISC title.
