Women's wrestling placed two in the top eight at the 2018 Bearcat Open January 20 in Lebanon, Illinois.
Shania Melendez finished eighth in the 101 lb. weight class after going 1-3 in the division. In the opening round, Melendez lost to Genae Sampract from McKendree by technical fall. After a bye, Melendez pinned Kassidy Ramirez from Bacone College in the second consolation round, but then lost to Maria Ahumada from Missouri Baptist University and lost a close 6-5 decision to Mckenzie Bacich from Campbellsville in the seventh place match.
Wrestling unattached, Juliana Olivo finished sixth in the 109 lb. division. After receiving a bye in the opening round, she pinned Coellet Rangel from the Bearcat Wrestling Club, but then lost to Alexandra Christoforatos from Menlo College in the quarterfinals. Olivo rebounded with a technical fall against Raven Guidry from Oklahoma City University and did the same against national No. 2 ranked Vanessa Ramirez from McKendree before losing to Kayla Walker from Missouri Baptist in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth place match, Christoforatos turned the tables with a 10-8 decision over Olivo.
In other action, Alexis Altamira went 0-2 in the 123 lb. weight class, Andrea Altamira went 0-2 at 130 lbs., and Mariya Gaither posted a 1-2 mark in the 143 lb. division, earning a decision over Angela Peralta from Menlo College. Kimberly De La Cruz went 1-2 in the 170 lb. class, with a pin over Alyssa Lopez from Campbellsville, and Jasmine Portugal went 0-2 in the 191 lb. division.
Women's wrestling gets to enjoy two idle weekends before the WCWA Collegiate Nationals February 9-10. Competition will begin at 9 a.m. that Saturday in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
