Men's Hockey Visits AIC This Weekend

The Lindenwood men's ice hockey team (1-5-0) hits the road to take on American International College (2-2-2, 2-1-0 AHA) in a two-game series in Springfield, Mass. Game one on Saturday is set for 6:05 p.m. CT, while the series finale will begin at 2:05 p.m. CT

The Lions hosted Air Force this past weekend and earned their first NCAA Division I win in program history in the series opener. Lindenwood defeated the Falcons by a score of 7-6 in game one, scoring five unanswered goals to earn the victory after trailing 6-2 in the second period. Lindenwood dropped the second game, 5-3.

By completing the comeback, Lindenwood became the first men's hockey program this century to earn its first NCAA Division I win in a game it had trailed by two or more goals.

Special teams played a huge part in game one, as the powerplay went three-for-five, including two scores on the man advantage in the third period. The Lions added a tally on the penalty kill as well, which came off the stick of Hunter Johannes. Overall, Lindenwood is converting at a 33 percent clip on the man advantage this season.

Johannes is no stranger to the AIC program, as the Eden Prairie, Minn. native suited up for the Yellow Jackets last season. Kyle Jeffers is another transfer from AIC, playing there during his freshman year in 2020-21. Jeffers is second on the team in goals (2) and points (6) so far this season.

AIC is a four-time defending champion of Atlantic Hockey and was picked atop the AHA preseason poll after receiving eight of nine preseason poll, while Blake Bennett earned a spot on the preseason all-conference team.

The Yellow Jackets are 2-2-2 this season and are coming off of a 7-3 loss to Holy Cross on Tuesday. Last season, AIC compiled a record of 22-13-3 and made an NCAA Tournament appearance.
