Bowling Teams Begin Season at Midwest Collegiate Championships

Women's bowling finished 13th in a field of 35 teams while the men took 18th in a field of 49 at the 51st Annual Midwest Collegiate Championships October 1-2 in Wauwatosa and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

In the first tournament action of the season, the Lady Lions jumped out to a great start, shooting 1,027 in game one to take an early lead, but as the day continued, Lindenwood slipped off the high scoring pace of the event and fell back in the standings. Despite that, the Lady Lions were still in the top eight after five games and in the cut for match play, but game six was a definite struggle and proved to be the worst of the day. That dropped Lindenwood to ninth with a six-game total of 5,541, just 56 pins behind St. Ambrose in eighth, but 377 behind day one leader Coe College.

The end of the day struggles appeared to carry over into baker play Sunday morning. The Lady Lions left 10 splits in the first four-game set, and then bowled their worst two games of the tournament to begin the second set. Lindenwood regrouped for the final two games, but had fallen to 15th place. With some positive momentum, the Lady Lions then bowled their highest set of the day at 792 and averaged just over 190 for the final 10 games of the day, but in a tightly packed field, they were only able to make up two spots and finished 13th. With a total of 8,420, Lindenwood finished just 108 pins behind eighth place Missouri Baptist and the cut line for match play, but only 58 pins behind Concordia in ninth. St. Francis (Ill.) earned the top seed with 9,072, but Mount Mercy ultimately claimed the title.

In men's competition, the Lions started slowly on Saturday with games of 933 and 980 and sat in 33rd place after the first two. Meanwhile, 15 teams were averaging over 1,000 per game and four were averaging over 1,100 per game. Lindenwood broke the thousand mark three of the next four games, including a high of 1,020, to post a day-one total of 5,917, however that left the Lions in 23rd place and 360 pins behind the eighth place cut line for match play.

After another slow start Sunday morning the first two games in baker play, Lindenwood broke the 200 mark six of the next seven games, including a high of 253. The Lions only topped 200 once more on the day, but still averaged just over 197 overall allowing them to climb up to 18th. With a final tournament total of 9,073, Lindenwood only lost 30-pins to the cut line on Sunday. After qualifying as the No. 5 seed, Lawrence Tech took the championship.

Individually, freshman Liz Rittenour led the Lady Lions with a six-game total of 1,231 (205.17 average), including a 237 and team high 243, to finish ninth in the women's field of 247. Renata Martinez totaled 1,203 (200.5 average) to take 11th, and Maddie San Soucie finished 29th with 1,164 (194 average).

Freshman Mike Anderson led the Lions with a total of 1,362 (227 average) including a high game of 252, to finish 10th in a field of 379. Blake Reiger totaled 1,306 (217.67 average) including a high of 245, to take 33rd, Juan Pablo Aguirre finished 39th with a total of 1,278 (213 average) and a team high 260 game, and Javier Muniz Vega took 51st with 1,246 (207.67 average). Freshman Rolando Ng Delgado helped the Lindenwood cause by averaging 219.25 for four games, including a score of 255.

In other action, the Lady Lions defeated Peru State College 2-1 in match play to win the junior division at the event.

After a weekend off, men's and women's bowling will return to action at the Mid-States Championships October 15-16 in Wichita, Kansas.
