The Lindenwood women's wrestling team finished 3
rd in the Southwest Regional of the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championship hosted at McKendree University on Sunday. The Lions also advanced seven individuals to the national championships. Lindenwood scored 85.5 team points, trailing the Regional Champion McKendree and Colorado Mesa to finish in third place of the ten teams participating.
The seven individuals who qualified for nationals are:
- Cayden Condit easily won her first two matches of the day to advance to the finals at 123. Condit's wins included a pin in only 44 seconds in the semifinals over Elizabeth Miller from Colorado Mesa who was ranked #7 nationally before losing in the championship match to the nations #2 ranked wrestler Marissa Gallegos
- Athena Willden was one of the two Lions to compete in the 130 lbs division and ended the day 4-1 and finishing third. She pinned Lillian Broadrick of Colorado Mesa in 55 seconds to capture third place.
- Sara Lake finished fourth at 155 and went 3-2 on the day. Her three pins were tied for most by any wrestler at the competition.
- Julianna Moreno went 2-2 on the day with both of her wins coming by pin and qualified for nationals in the 143 lb weight class after finishing in fourth place
- Valeriia Mamleeva finished fifth after going 2-2 at 109 weight class on the day and won her fifth place match via tech fall over Natalie Maya Cortes of Colorado Mesa 18-8, which was the most match points scored by an individual in the tournament.
- Amanda McAleavey also finished fifth at 116 and went 1-2 on the day including a pin over Cristal De Santiago from Schriener in the 5th place match
- Kaycee Fitero went 1-2 on the day, but her one win in the 191lbs 5th place match over Schreiner's Kalyn Martinez was an important one as it clinched her a spot at nationals.
The seven individuals will travel to the NCWWC National Tournament in Adrian, Michigan that begins on Friday, March 4.
