Bowling Teams Compete at MSC Events

Men's and women's bowling competed at back-to-back one-day tournaments hosted by the Mid-South Conference January 21-22 in Louisville, Kentucky. The Lions finished fifth and the Lady Lions took eighth at the Lynne Jordan Memorial on Saturday, then the Lions finished 11th and the Lady Lions took sixth at the Thomas Burris Memorial on Sunday. Each event featured five team games and 12 baker games.

The Lions started a bit slowly on Saturday with games of 913, 1,005, and 948 to sit in 10th place in the field of 25. Games of 1,109 and 986 pushed Lindenwood all the way up to fifth place with a team total of 4,961. The Lions broke the 200 mark seven of the first eight games in baker play, including sets of 875 and 830, and a high game of 249. Lindenwood was still in fifth place, but had closed the gap to fourth down to just 40 pins. A set of 764 to finish the day wasn't enough to move up any places, but solidified the Lions in fifth place with a grand total of 7,430 for the day.

On the women's side, the Lady Lions also started slowly, breaking 900 just twice in the first three games leaving them in a tie for 12th with Shawnee State. Lindenwood finished the team portion of competition with games of 924 and 938 for a total of 4,515 which was enough to inch up a spot to 11th. The Lady Lions only broke 200 once in the 12 games of baker, but steady sets of 740, 764, and 702 pushed the team all the way to eighth place with a grand total of 6,721, only 19-pins away from seventh.
Emmanuel McPherson (far right) Won the Lynne Jordan Memorial Individual Title

Individually, Emmanuel McPherson led the Lions and the entire field of 215 bowlers with a five-game total of 1,172 (234.4 average), including high games of 279 and 242. He earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team as the individual champion. Graham Mortimore took 38th with 965 (193 average), Juan Pablo Aguirre totaled 961 (192.2 average) to finish 41st, and Jared Felipa was right behind in 42nd with 960 (192 average). Rolando Ng Delgado averaged 222.75 for four games and Michael Anderson averaged 225.5 for two games to help the Lindenwood cause.

In women's individual competition, Hailey Bozych led the Lady Lions with a total of 982 (196.4 average) to take 19th in the field of 156 bowlers. Samantha Smith totaled 971 (194.2 average) to finish 27th, and Haylie Frick shot 952 (190.4 average) to take 31st.

The Lady Lions had a better start in the Thomas Burris Memorial on Sunday and sat in seventh place after an opening game of 943. After a rough game two, Lindenwood rebounded for games of 974, 952, and 1,074, a season high, to post a team total of 4,811. With 12 baker games to go, the Lady Lions sat in sixth place, only 110 pins behind Webber International in fifth and 144 pins behind Tennessee Southern in fourth.

Lindenwood stayed hot the first set of baker, firing 804 with a high game of 245, but a rough set number two dashed any hopes of moving up in the standings. The Lady Lions finished with a set of 749 to solidify the sixth-place finish with a grand total of 7,017.

The scoring pace in the men's division on Sunday was through the roof with nine of the 25 teams in "plus" territory after game two. The Lions shot games of 930 and 1,037 to start, but that was only good enough for 11th place. Games of 1,031 and 1,086 followed and that was enough for Lindenwood to get to ninth place, but in a tightly packed field, only 126-pins separated sixth from 13th place, so every pin was important. The Lions finished with 978 for a team total of 5,062, then posted an even 800 the first set of baker, but lost two spots in the standings. There was still opportunity to move back up, but a low set two was costly, and even though Lindenwood finished with a set of 808, it wasn't enough to gain back any position. The Lions finished with a grand total of 7,368.

Individually, Samantha Smith led the Lady Lions with a total of 1,026 (205.2 average), including a high game of 235, to finish 11th in the field of 152 bowlers. Renata Martinez was close behind with 1,018 (203.6 average) to take 14th, and Haylie Frick totaled 973 (194.6 average) to finish 28th. Elizabeth Rittenour averaged 188.5 for four to help the Lindenwood cause.

In the men's field of 206, Javier Muniz Vega led the Lions with a five-game total of 1,103 (220.6 average) to take 19th place. He was followed closely by Troy Owens, Jr. in 21st place with 1,098 (219.6 average), and Callum Stewart in 32nd place with 1,074 (214.8 average). Juan Pablo Aguirre totaled 1,045 (209 average) for 36th place, Mike Anderson shot 1,040 (208 average) for 43rd, and Drew Sacks totaled 1,030 (206 average) for 48th place. Rolando Ng Delgado finished 53rd with 1,021 (204.2 average), Christopher Albanese totaled 1,017 (203.4 average) for 55th, and Jacob Bartosiak took 60th with 1,008 (201.6 average).

In other action from Sunday, Lindenwood captured the junior division team trophy with a total of 5,811, finishing 290-pins ahead of Pikeville.

After a weekend off, the bowling teams return to the lanes for the McK Baker Challenge February 4-5 in Fairview Heights and Belleville, Illinois.
