Bowling Teams Advance to Match Play at Mid-States Championships

Men's bowling finished in sixth place and women's bowling was seventh in qualifying to advance to bracket play at the 55th Annual Mid-States Intercollegiate Championships October 21-22 in Wichita, Kansas. Both teams were knocked out in the opening round of best-of-five baker matches.

The Lions started well in the first game of six on Saturday, posting a score of 1,021. After dipping below the thousand mark in game two, they rebounded with games of 1,006 and 983 to climb to fifth place in the field of 32 teams. The best bowling of the day for Lindenwood followed with games of 1,066 and 1,069 for a day one total of 6,104 to sit in third place behind St. Ambrose in second and Wichita State in first.

Sunday consisted of five, four-game baker sets and the Lions bowled well in the first one, posting two of their highest games of the day with 232 and 233. The set totaled 827 and they followed it with 817 which included a game of 234, but Lindenwood could not maintain that pace in the following set, but the Lions still sat in fourth place. From that point, Lindenwood finished the final two sets well with scores of 801 and 833 for a baker total of 4023 (201.15 average) and grand total of 10,127. Despite the strong finish, a high scoring pace down the stretch left the Lions in sixth place, five pins ahead of Newman University in seventh, just 27 pins behind Wisconsin – Whitewater in fifth.

As the No. 6 seed, Lindenwood faced No. 3 seed Mount Mercy in the quarterfinals of bracket play. Despite games of 226, 201, and 182, the Lions were swept in three straight to end their weekend.

In the women's field of 24 teams, the Lady Lions faced a lower than expected scoring pace on Saturday. Despite games of 890 and 940, Lindenwood sat in fourth place after the first two games, but then the grind began. The Lady Lions didn't break 900 for the rest of the day, finishing with a total of 5,173. In a tightly grouped standings sheet, Lindenwood sat in ninth place, only 69 pins ahead of 13th place, but just 43 pins away from eighth place Grand View and the cut for match play.

Things went better in baker competition on Sunday, but it was still a tricky condition. The Lady Lions began the day with one of their five games in the 200's, but finished the opening set with just 707. Set two proved to be their best with 784, including a 216, their high game of the day. Lindenwood averaged just under 177 for the remaining 12 games, but totaled 3,613 (180.65 average) overall. With a grand total of 8,786, that was enough to climb to seventh place, comfortably earning a spot in match play by 140 pins.

As the No. 7 seed, the Lady Lions faced No. 2 seed Newman in the opening round and came out fast, earning a convincing 212-180 victory. Game two was much closer, and lower scoring, but Lindenwood escaped with a 168-160 win to lead 2-0 in the match. Only needing one more victory to advance, the Lady Lions continued to struggle while the Jets found their stride to take the next two games and tie the match 2-2. Lindenwood regrouped and posted a solid score, but Newman was better, taking it 212-180.

Individually in the men's field of 312 bowlers, Emmanuel McPherson finished fourth with a total of 1,367 (227.83 average) including a high game of 278 to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Nathan Bassford took 30th with 1,255 (209.17 average), Eli Northcutt finished 34th with 1,231 (205.17 average), and Juan Pablo Aguire took 61st with 1,174 (195.67 average). Luke Batchelor averaged 204.33 for three games to help the Lions cause.

In the women's field of 203, Hailey Bozych led the Lady Lions with 1,143 (190.5 average) to take 11th place. Samantha Smith finished 40th and Julia Smith took 48th place.
