Women’s Bowling Finishes Second at WHAC Great Lakes Open; Men Third

Women's bowling finished second while the men's team took third at the Wolverine – Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Great Lakes Open Saturday in Comstock Park, Michigan.

Coming off a fantastic performance a day earlier, the Lady Lions started well again, shooting 956 in game one to sit among the leaders. It was more of a struggle in game two with Lindenwood shooting just 900, but the Lady Lions recovered with scores of 930 and 967 to complete the team portion of the tournament with a total of 3753. That was good enough for first place at the time, 37 pins ahead of second place Indiana Tech and 39 pins ahead of Concordia University in third place.

So far this season, the Lady Lions had performed better in baker competition than team competition, but that was not the case this time as they struggled with a difficult pair and had to spend eight games on it. Lindenwood only broke 180 three times through those eight games and averaged just under 170. That dropped the Lady Lions down to fourth place, 111 pins away from the first place Warriors.

As luck would have it, Lindenwood was paired up with Indiana Tech for the final eight games. The Lady Lions performed much better down the stretch, averaging just over 189 with three games in the 200's including a high of 224. It was better than the Warriors, but not enough to make up the deficit. Lindenwood finished with a baker total of 2872 (179.5 average) and a grand total of 6625, finishing in second place 91 pins behind Indiana Tech and just 24 pins in front of Madonna University in third.

In the men's division, the Lions posted a score of 974 in game one, but six other teams broke the thousand mark and one came close to 1200, so Lindenwood sat in seventh and was fighting an uphill battle right away. The Lions responded well with games of 1119, 1044, and 1105 to finish the four team games in fourth place with a total of 4242. That put them just 155 pins out of first and only seven out of third.

Lindenwood continued the gathered momentum into the 16-game baker block with 12 games above 200 including highs of 247 and 248. The Lions posted four-game sets of 848, 873, 878, and 829 for a baker total of 3428 (214.25 average), the second-best block of the tournament. With a grand total of 7670, Lindenwood finished third, just 68 pins behind tournament champion Indiana Tech and 29 behind Concordia in second.

Liz Rittenour was the only one to average over 200 in the women's field, totaling 824 (206 average) with a high game of 268. As the individual champion, she was first on the All-Tournament Team. Hailey Bozych took 13th with 759 (189.75 average) and Samantha Smith finished 23rd with 735 (183.75 average). Carissa Merkle averaged 191 for three games to help the Lindenwood cause.

In a very high scoring men's field, Emmanuel McPherson totaled 964 (241 average) including a high game of 278 to take third and earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Tyler Amos took 17th with 869 (217.25 average) including a high game of 265, Isaiah Armstrong tied for 26th with 830 (207.5 average) with a high game of 257, and Nathan Bassford was close behind in 28th with 829 (207.25 average) with a high of 265. Eli Northcutt averaged 200.25 for three games and Javier Muniz Vega averaged 199.75 for three games to help the Lions cause.

After an idle weekend, the bowling teams wrap up the fall campaign at the National Team Match Games tournament November 18-19 in Fairview Heights and Belleville, Illinois.
