He has given his heart and soul to the student-athletes here at Lindenwood and beyond."

Brian Smith's lacrosse career began in 1997 as a member of the inaugural Clayton High School team, in Saint Louis, Mo. It was during that time where Smith fell in love with the game of lacrosse. His playing career continued at Mitchell College in New London, Conn. After two seasons at Mitchell, Smith transferred to Lindenwood University to join their inaugural men's team in 2003. In 2004, while still playing at Lindenwood, Brian began his coaching career as an assistant with his alma mater Clayton High, under Mike O'Brien. Smith was with the program until 2010, highlighted by two Missouri State Championship appearances in 2008 & 2010 and the Assistant Coach of the Year Award in 2007.

During this time, the program was a club team participating in the WCLA. In 2010, the program advanced to its first Final Four. After the 2011 season, Lindenwood announced they would be joining the NCAA at the Division II level in the 2012 season.

Smith spent 11 seasons in NCAA Division II and helped coach the team to 7 conference titles, 8 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, with 5 NCAA Final Four Appearances and won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2021, which happens to be Lindenwood's first and only NCAA National Championship in any sport. In 2023, Brian spent his first season as a NCAA Division I coach with Lindenwood in their inaugural DI season. In year one, Lindenwood won 8 games including a win against Central Michigan an NCAA tournament team and made the ASUN Conference Tournament.

Throughout the entirety of his coaching career, Brian has also worked with both boys' and girls' youth lacrosse players through Brave Lacrosse providing those with a love for the game opportunities to learn, play and compete. It was through Brave that Brian was first introduced to the women's game after starting the first girl's lacrosse select team in Missouri.

Today Brian and Lindenwood head into their second NCAA Division I season, and he continues to work with high school and youth players with Lou Fusz Athletic.
