The Lindenwood men's volleyball team prevailed over Graceland on Sunday afternoon at the Hyland Arena. The match went all five games with scores of 19-25, 25-17, 25-21, 23-25, and 15-9.
In the first set, Graceland gained an 11-10 lead and never let up, winning the game by six points.
Lindenwood captured the lead at 14-13 in the second game, thanks to a
Mike Warren kill, and ran away with it to win by eight points.
Jack Mitchell was instrumental in the Lions taking this game, registering two blocks and a kill to put his team in front.
Game three was close until Lindenwood went on a 10-4 run near the end of the set to take a 2-1 lead going into the fourth game.
Lindenwood dominated the fourth set, but the game slipped their hands. The Lions led by as many as 10 points but could not close out the Yellowjackets, and fell 25-23. In this set,
Bradley Johnston helped put Lindenwood in control with five kills early on, and three consecutive service aces during a 7-0 stretch.
With the match tied 2-2, Lindenwood seized momentum early in the fifth game, after a kill by Warren. From that point, the Lions went on a 10-6 run to win game five and the match.
Leading Lindenwood, Johnston recorded 14 kills, 10 digs, five service aces, four blocks, and two assists. Mitchell and
Luke Knowlson chipped in with eight blocks each, while Knowlson also contributed 7 blocks. Leading the way in assists were
Carson Grissinger and
Mike Larson with 26 and 20 assists respectively.
Mike Emerick totaled a team-high 12 digs in the victory.
Lindenwood (11-5, 4-2) will travel to Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday to take on Grand Canyon University, the first of a four-game road-trip for the Lions.
