Lindenwood Sweeps Johnson & Wales Twice in Weekend Series

Sunday was Senior Day at Hyland Arena for the Lindenwood men's volleyball team, and it went well for the Lions, sweeping Johnson & Wales for the second time in as many days. Lindenwood won the second day's match with scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-20.

The Lions got off to a hot start in the first set, but the Wildcats eventually tied the match 11-11. A few points later, Lindenwood went on a 5-0 run to create some separation between the teams and went on to clinch the game on a block by two seniors, Mike Warren and Matt Schmack.

The Wildcats took a lead in the middle of the second set, going up 15-13. But Lindenwood regained the lead, and with Raphael Mattos serving, went on a 5-point stretch to pull away again.

Game three was close the whole way, and the teams were tied 15-15. The Lions began to distance themselves, as senior Rick Hess tallied two blocks and a kill down the stretch to help Lindenwood complete the sweep.

JM Plummer led the team in kills with 11, while Mike Larson contributed a team-high 15 assists, and Carson Grissinger had nine. On the defensive side, Luke Knowlson recorded seven total blocks and Plummer had six digs. Mike Emerick collected five digs in the win.

On Saturday, Lindenwood swept Johnson & Wales in three games. The Lions won the match with scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 26-24.

The first game was all Lindenwood, as the Lions went on a 6-0 run, which included two Matt Schmack kills, to make the score 17-8. From that point, they coasted for the six-point win.

Game two was more of the same. Lindenwood went on a crucial 11-6 stretch to go up by five in the latter stages of the game. And the Lions won the set on a Mike Larson ace.

The final set was tight the entire way. Raphael Mattos played a key role in the victory, recording an ace and then a kill in consecutive points to bring the Lions back within a point of the Wildcats. JM Plummer closed out the sweep for Lindenwood, tallying a kill and an ace for the final points.
