Women's Lacrosse Opens Season With A Victory

Box Score In its first official game as a varsity program, the Lindenwood women's lacrosse team emerged victorious. The Lady Lions defeated another first-year program, Saint Leo, on Friday evening by a 23-5 score.

Saint Leo scored the first goal of the game, but Lindenwood answered with eight straight goals in just over a 12-minute span. Six different Lady Lions scored in that stretch, including two each from Kara Cashen and Lexi Crusha. After trading scores, Lindenwood then went on a 6-0 run and it led 15-3 at halftime.

Lindenwood continued adding to its lead throughout the final half before eventually winning by a final margin of 18 goals.

Cashen finished the game with five goals and one assist. She entered Lindenwood history as well by scoring the first goal in program history in a varsity contest. Crusha also finished the contest with six points as she recorded three goals and three assists.

Other goal scorers included Justiene Groothuis with four goals, Lindsey Palmer and Kathryn St. George with three goals apiece, Jordyn Constance and Meghan Chase both with two goals, and one goal from Melissa Menchella. Menchella had two assists and Groothuis collected one assist.

Defensively, Christine Hehmeyer played nearly 45 minutes in goal and made four saves in seven attempts. Brittany Frankenfeld played the final 15 minutes and stopped one-of-three shots. St. George led the team with five groundballs.

Lindenwood will remain in Florida throughout the weekend and will face Florida Southern on Sunday afternoon.
