Box Score The Lindenwood women's lacrosse team fell on Sunday in its final game in Florida. The Lady Lions lost to Florida Southern in an 18-16 shootout.
The game was close throughout as neither team led by more than four goals. The turning point came with the score tied at 14 midway through the second half. Lindenwood received a big save from goalie
Christine Hehmeyer on a free position attempt. The Lady Lions couldn't clear the ball though and Florida Southern scored with 12:30 remaining. Just 28 seconds later, the Moccasins scored again to take a 16-14 advantage.
The two teams traded goals until the score was 18-16 with just over six minutes remaining. Twice after that, Lindenwood had good scoring chances but both times hit the post with a shot attempt. Florida Southern was able to control play for the majority of time after that second missed shot and Lindenwood ran out of time.
Justiene Groothuis and
Kara Cashen both recorded four goals and an assist.
Lexi Crusha had four points with two goals and two assists.
Lindsey Palmer recorded three goals,
Kathryn St. George had two, and
Melissa Menchella scored once. Hehmeyer made seven saves in goal,
Jamie Miller led the team with two caused turnovers, and Groothuis had a team-high five groundballs.
Lindenwood, now 1-1 on the season, will have its home opener next Friday with a 4 p.m. game against Colorado Mesa. The contest will be the first conference game in the program's new affiliation with the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.
