For the second year in a row, the women’s wrestling team finished in fourth place at the Women’s College Wrestling Association (WCWA) National Championship, concluded January 27 in Bristol, Tenn.
Simon Fraser University captured the national title with a total of 116 points and six individual titles to dethrone four-time defending champion Oklahoma City University. The Stars accumulated 109 points to settle for second, King College was third with 87 points and the Lady Lions had a total of 44 points.
After winning her first individual championship in the 130 pound weight class in 2012, Lindenwood senior Shauna Isbell fell short of defending her title, losing in the finals to Helen Maroulis from Simon Fraser. Monica Ramirez also earned a runner-up finish in the 136 pound division and Brittany David took third in the 170 pound weight class.
Seven other Lady Lions finished in the top eight in their respective weight classes. Savanna Nobile was eighth at 109 pounds, Diaysha Moore was sixth at 123 pounds, Tianna Camous finished sixth at 130 pounds, Rachael Shannon was sixth and Crystal Borrow seventh in the 143 pound class, Amy Spafford took eighth at 155 pounds and Victoria Francis was fifth at 170 pounds.
All 10 Lindenwood wrestlers in the top eight of their weight class earned All-American status.
The Lady Lions return to the mat at the Dave Schultz Memorial International Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo. February 2. Competition begins at 9 a.m.
