The Lindenwood University chess team defeated Washington University in St. Louis 4-2 on Saturday at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis.
The Lions started strong when Zack Stuart won a piece against WU's Ben Miller, then finished the first game off with a nifty tactical combination. Alex Richter outplayed his opponent and won a piece to seal the game to give the Lions a 2-0 lead early into the competition. Kostya Kavutskiy forced his opponent's king into the open early on and eventually secured a win and a full point for Lindenwood.
David Guerra and Nolan Hendrickson each drew with their opponents but the decisions clinched the match for Lindenwood
Lucas McCain recorded the lone victory for Washington University the final game of the match when Lindenwood's Priyadharshan Kannapan was upset by Lucas McCain in a tense game that lasted for hours.
