Box Score The No. 15 Lindenwood women's lacrosse team fell on the road on Wednesday evening to No. 5 Adelphi by an 18-12 margin. The loss was just the second on the season for the Lady Lions.
The game between the two nationally-ranked teams was billed as a battle between two of the top scoring teams in the NCAA Division II. It was Adelphi's defense though that made the difference. The Panthers held Lindenwood to six goals below its season average. Adelphi also prevented the Lady Lions from going on quick scoring runs, as Lindenwood had back-to-back goals just twice in the game.
Adelphi never trailed as it jumped out to a 4-1 lead less than four minutes into the contest. The two teams then traded goals for the remainder of the half and the Lady Lions trailed 8-5 at halftime.
The Panthers then essentially put the game away in the first 10:06 of the second half when they opened the period on a 5-1 run. That extended their lead to seven and Lindenwood could never get closer than five goals the rest of the way.
Lindsey Palmer led Lindenwood with three goals, while
Shelby Polk finished with two goals, one assist, 10 draw controls, and two caused turnovers.
Melissa Menchella and
Maddi Ossello had two goals apiece.
Ana Gullett and
Justiene Groothuis both had one goal and one assist,
Meghan Chase had a goal, and
Melissa Smith added an assist. Groothuis had a team-high three groundballs and
Christine Hehmeyer made seven saves in goal.
Lindenwood falls to 14-2 with the setback. The Lady Lions end the season next Wednesday at McKendree.
