Track and Field Has Five All-Conference Performances At MIAA Outdoor Meet

The Lindenwood track and field teams concluded its season on Sunday at the 2013 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Lindenwood won two MIAA individual titles and had five all-conference athletes at the event.

Lindenwood swept the hammer event titles with Lindsey Blackwell winning the women's event and Mitchell Heady winning the men's title. Other all-conference performers for the women were Jessica Ecker in the discus and Tanya Chibanda in the 1500m. For the men, Brian Kertz earned the honor in the discus.

Lindenwood's women's team finished seventh out of 12 schools with 44 points. The Lady Lions were five points behind Truman and 5.5 points ahead of Fort Hays State. Lincoln won the women's team championship with 217 points.

The men's team finished tenth out of 11 MIAA track programs. The Lions had 30 points and finished between Fort Hays State (30) and Truman (7). Pittsburg State captured the men's team title with 145 points.

Saturday's Recap
Lindenwood's throwers were the story on Saturday at the MIAA track and field meet, led by Blackwell and Heady winning conference titles.

Heady won Lindenwood's first MIAA individual title in the weight throw at this year's indoor competition and added to his trophy case by winning the outdoor hammer. He was in second place after five throw before setting a personal-best of 61.41m in his final attempt. That mark won the event by over two meters.

Blackwell's victory was one of the biggest surprises of the MIAA meet. She entered with a season-best throw of 44.75m and was not even competing in the top flight for the preliminary throws. She advanced to the finals though with a mark of 48.61m on her third attempt. Blackwell then won the competition on her sixth throw with a mark of 51.10, the second-best mark in Lindenwood history. She captured the conference title, the first individual crown for a Lindenwood woman in any sport, by over a meter.

Ecker and Kertz both had bronze finishes in the discus. Also in the discus, Blackwell scored one more point with an eighth-place showing. For the men, Kertz finished eighth in the hammer and Edgar Garza was seven in the pole vault. The other scorer for the women was Chelsea Smith coming in eighth in the hammer.

On the track, three Lindenwood runners advanced to Sunday's finals. China Moore was fourth in the prelims for the women's 100m hurdles. Two Lions will be in the 400m hurdles finals as Elrich Walker qualified sixth and Mike Reynoso was eighth.

Sunday's Recap
Tanya Chibanda was the highlight of day two after finished runner-up in the 1500m. She ran a 4:42.06 and edged out the third-place runner by just over one second.

Also on the track for the women's team, Moore finished fourth in the 100m hurdles finals and the 4x400 relay team came in fifth. For the men on the track, two athletes were in the 400m hurdles finals. Walker came in fourth in the finals and Reynoso was seventh. Also for the men's in the running events, the 4x100 relay team came in seventh.

In the field events, Ecker had the top showing on the day by coming in fifth in the women's javelin. Teammate Natasha Mouratidou finished eighth in the same event. Claire Buckman tied for sixth in the pole vault and Blackwell was seventh in the shot put. On the men's side, Tristan Phillips had a seventh-place showing in the javelin.
