The top Lindenwood chess team won enough team matches to tie for sixth, but finished 11
th overall based on tie-breakers at the 60
th Pan-American Intercollegiate Chess Championship, concluded December 30 in Lubbock, Texas.
The Lions "A" team posted a record of 4-2 at the event with wins against Florida State, New York University, the University of Toronto and The University of Texas-Austin and losses versus the University of Texas-Dallas and the University of Illinois.
International Master Priyadharshan Kannappan had one of the best performances, scoring 4.5/6 to finish sixth overall
on the second board for Lindenwood. FM Kostya Kavutskiy went 4/6 on board three and Women's Grand Master Anna Sharevich went 3.5/5 on board four. Nolan Hendrickson won first place alternate honors by winning all three matches he played as a replacement for the Lions.
Lindenwood entered two other teams at the event. The "B" team finished 29
th and the "C" team ended in 37
th place. Alex Richter was the top player for the Lions, winning 3.5 points out of six on the second board.
Webster University swept the tournament with a 6-0 match record to earn a spot in the Final Four of collegiate chess, dubbed the President's Cup. The University of Maryland-Baltimore County, the University of Illinois and Texas Tech were the other three schools to advance. A total of 42 teams from 23 different colleges competed at the Pan-American Chess Championships.
