Box Score The Lindenwood women's lacrosse team earned a victory over a nationally-ranked team for the first time in the program's NCAA history. The No. 13 Lady Lions defeated No. 15 Indiana of Pennsylvania on Sunday by an 18-11 score in Indiana, Pa.
The Lady Lions offense exploded for 12 second-half goals which turned a 6-5 halftime lead into a comfortable seven-goal victory. Lindenwood received a huge game from
Melissa Smith who had five goals and seven assists. She assisted on four straight goals in the second half to spark a 5-0 Lindenwood run that turned an 8-7 game into a 13-7 contest.
Four Lady Lions scored three goals in the game in
Shelby Polk, Amanda Schmipke,
Melissa Menchella, and
Erin Abbott.
Lindsey Palmer had the team's other goal as well as an assist. Other assists went to
Maddi Ossello and Abbott.
Smith, Menchella, Ossello, and
Christine Hehmeyer all tied for the team-high with three groundballs. Polk had 12 draw controls and Ossello caused five turnovers. In goal, Hehmeyer made seven saves and allowed nine goals, and
Delaney Solomon made two saves and gave up two scores.
Lindenwood, which is now 4-1 on the year, continues its current road trip next Thursday with a contest at Pfeiffer.
