Women’s Wrestling Takes Sixth at Patriot Duals

Women's wrestling took sixth place at the Patriot Duals October 9-10 in Williamsburg, Ky.  The Lady Lions went 3-0 in pool play on Friday, but only managed a 1-3 record in bracket competition on Saturday.

Lindenwood was placed in Pool A and earned a 42-5 victory in the first dual against the McKendree University B squad.  The Lady Lions only lost one match and Hannah Padilla (109 lbs.), Brenda Cardenas (130 lbs.), Axa Molina (136 lbs.), Monica Ramirez (143 lbs.), and Anna McAleavey (155 lbs.) all recorded pins.

Lindenwood won its second dual in pool play 39-9 over Life University B.  The Lady Lions actually fell behind 9-0, but quickly rallied to win the final eight matches.  Tori Degginger started the string of victories with a pin at 116 pounds, while Molina earned her second of the day.  Gabriela Guzman (191 lbs.) also recorded a fall in the dual.

The final round of pool play pitted the Lady Lions against Campbellsville University, one of the top ranked teams in the country, and Lindenwood emerged with a 27-21 victory.  The Lady Lions once again fell behind early, but pins from Degginger (116 lbs.) and Savanna Nobile (123 lbs.) quickly tied the dual. After losing two hard-fought decisions in the 130 and 136 pound matches, Ramirez brought Lindenwood back to even with a pin at 143 pounds.  After another loss by decision in the 155 pound match-up, Lisa Gonzalez pinned her opponent in the 170 pound match and Guzman sealed the upset with a pin at 191 pounds.

Things didn't go as well in bracket play on Saturday.  In the opening round, the Lady Lions ran into a stout McKendree squad and were defeated 28-16.  Lindenwood was never really in the dual after losing the first six matches.  Ramirez stemmed the tide briefly with a minor decision at 143 pounds, and Gonzalez and Guzman each picked up five points down the stretch, but it wasn't enough.

The Lady Lions earned their only dual win in the next round 28-17 over Missouri Baptist.  Degginger (116 lbs.), Nobile (123 lbs.), Ramirez (143 lbs.), McAleavey (155 lbs.), and Gonzalez (170 lbs.) all pinned their opponents while Lindenwood went 6-4 overall in head-to-head matches.

The victory set up a rematch against Campbellsville and both teams ended with 23 points, but the Tigers took the win based on criteria.  The Lady Lions were behind 14-1 after the first three matches, but won five of the next six to take a 23-18 lead, however, a pin from Campbellsville in the 191 pound match tied the score, forcing the use of criteria to determine the overall victor.

As luck would have it, that created the exact same match-up in the fifth place dual, but this time, the Tigers prevailed outright 26-19.  Padilla (109 lbs.), Ramirez (143 lbs.), Gonzalez (170 lbs.), and Guzman (191 lbs.) all won for Lindenwood, but the Lady Lions fell behind 21-5 and were eliminated from a chance to win before the final two matches took place.

After a weekend off, Lindenwood will travel to Oklahoma City, Okla., for the Cliff Keen Duals, hosted by Oklahoma City University October 23-24.  Competition will begin at 9 a.m. Friday morning at the Freede Center.
