The Lindenwood men's and women's track and field team traveled to Elsah, Ill. for a two-day event at the Principia Relays. After a hard fought couple days, both the men and women had some success in several events against schools such as McKendree, Lindenwood-Belleville, Maryville, and others.
Kendra Smith and
Erin Hodge got it going for the Lions as Smith jumped 5.47m to win the long jump, while Hodge placed third in the event after a jump of 5.28m. Smith also won the triple jump at 11.67m. Hodge added a third place finish in the 60 MH with a time of 9.09.
Michelle Kyle was at it again, this time throwing 17.68m in the weight throw edging out teammate
Chelsea Smith, who threw 14.95m, as the pair finished first and second, respectively.
Vanessa Cook placed fifth after a throw of 14.54m, and
Kearstin Cantrell threw for 13.58m, which was good for seventh. Cook also threw the shot put 11.53m, which was good for second place in the event.
Jerelle Jones fnished fifth in the 200m with a time of 26.60, just .4 seconds behind the first-place finisher. Jones was also part of the 1600 sprint medley that defeated McKendree, along with
Maya Mason,
Michaela Mason, and
Jennifer Carter.
Zori Holman finished the high jump at 1.60m, just behind the winner who finished at 1.61m.
For the men,
Deondra Canaday won the weight throw after a toss of 17.46m.
Ryan Hermann threw 15.54m in the event, which was good for third in the event. Canaday also added a second place finish in the shot put with a top throw of 16.10m.Â
In the high jump, Akintunde Akinyemi almost edged out the winner falling just .06m behind and finished with a jump of 1.99m.
Michael Mlambo also finished second in the long jump after a launch of 6.7m.
Lavorrie Johnson jumped 6.33m in the event, which was good for seventh.
The distance medley put on a display, winning by nine seconds over Greenville College and over 12 seconds past host Principia. The final time of 10:46.50 was good for first place as
Paul Golian,
Zach McKinley,
Jerod Broadbooks, and
Colin Cernik were the runners pacing the Lions.
Broadbooks also added a win in the mile run with a time of 4:31.38. Cernik gave Lindenwood a third place finish in the 3000m run with a time of 9:02.66. Golian finished in eighth in the same event.
The Lindenwood track and field squads compete again next weekend on February 6th at the Jim Green Invitational in Jacksonville, Ill.
