The Lindenwood women's tennis team prevailed in a 5-4 tightly-contested dual with Missouri Western on the road on Saturday.
In doubles, the Lady Lions picked up wins at No. 1 and 2 to clinch that portion of the match.
Clara Piccamiglio and
Diana Castro jumped ahead 6-1 at No. 1 before their opponents defaulted the match.
Anna Barbasheva and
Rebeca Aguilar dominated at No. 2 with an 8-1 route. The Lady Lions nearly swept doubles, but
Haya Hamed and
Alexis McCarthy barely lost in a 9-7 nailbiter at No. 3.
Singles became a battle between the two teams. Although none of the matches went to three sets, they remained neck-to-neck. However, the Lady Lions captured three victories to clinch the dual. Piccamiglio coasted to an easy 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 while McCarthy also cruised through her match, winning 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6. Aguilar had a closer contest, but still won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5.
After the win, the Lady Lions improve to 8-12 on the season. The match against William Jewel on Sunday was cancelled, so Lindenwood will prepare to host Fort Hays on Saturday, April 8 starting at 10 am.
