Track and Field Has Two Top-Five Finishes At NCAA Outdoor National Championships

The Lindenwood track and field program had two top-five finishes at the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Omar Es Salmouny was runner-up in the men's 3,000m steeplechase, and Kendra Smith was fifth in the women's triple jump.

Es Salmouny's performance was the top individual finish for the program since it started competing in the NCAA national championships four years ago. He finished sixth in the prelims with a time of 9:00.32, which qualified him for Friday's finals. In the finals, Es Salmouny bettered his previous career-high by over 10 seconds. His time of 8:46.60 was second by just over two seconds, and he was three seconds ahead of the third-place runner.

Smith capped off her great Lindenwood career by winning her four All-American award. Early on, she appeared in danger of missing the finals. In her final prelim jump, though, she set a career-high with a mark of 12.64m. That jump placed her in fifth and she stayed in that position through three more rounds of jumps.

Smith is one of the most successful athletes for the Lady Lions since they moved to the NCAA level. She also finished sixth in the 2015 outdoor national meet, was fourth in the 2016 indoor nationals, and sixth in this year's indoor competition. She was also a four-time all-MIAA honoree, including being runner-up in the triple jump at the indoor and outdoor meets this year.

Two other Lindenwood athletes also qualified for nationals. Anna Tyan finished 18th in the high jump event, clearing 1.62m. Xavier Boland competed in the pole vault, but did not clear the first height he attempted.

The Lindenwood men's team finished with eight points, and it tied for 30th out of 70 teams that scored at the event. The women's team collected four points, and it tied for 50th out of 69 scoring programs.
