Chess Team Earns Nine Wins at Pan-Am Championships

The Lindenwood chess team compiled nine wins at the 2017 Pan-Am Intercollegiate Chess Championships December 27-30 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Nicholas Rosenthal earned the most points at four playing from Board 1.  Jeffrey Kendall won two matches, and Blake Jansen and Lucas Beddow each compiled a point for the Lions team.  Playing as alternates, Nam Nguyen had a win and a draw, while James Schneider was shutout.

The team entered the competition with an average rating of 1,250.3, with Rosenthal having the highest individual rating at 2,284.  Each team member played six matches at the competition.

Chess Team Manager Steve Wolk summed up the experience.

"Everyone played much better than what our results might show," he said.  "Nicholas was always playing someone that was rated higher, and our other starters were sometimes facing someone with a rating over 1,200 points higher."

The chess squad will next compete at the 2018 U.S. Amateur Team North competition February 16-18 in Schaumburg, Illinois, outside of Chicago.
