Following a top-spot finish at the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships a few weeks ago,
Lilly Peters of the Lindenwood track and field team has qualified for the NCAA West Regional Preliminary meet in the Javelin Throw on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. With this, she has become the first Lindenwood athlete to qualify for a Championship at the Division I level.
The NCAA Preliminary Meets serve as the first round site for the national postseason meet, which will be held in Eugene, Oregon at Hayward Field, June 10-13. The two preliminary meets this year will be held in Fayetteville, Ark. hosted by the University of Arkansas and Lexington, Ky., hosted by the University of Kentucky.
To qualify for the preliminary meets, athletes must rank in the top-48 in an individual event. Top-12 finishers at the preliminary meets will earn qualification to the finals site in Oregon.
Peters has had an outstanding outdoor campaign, finishing in the top five in the Javelin six times, including four first place finishes. One of those first-place finishes came at the Drake Relays where she threw 47.97m, taking the top spot and breaking the school record. The Hamburg, Iowa native also set the new school record at the Cougar Classic in April.
The sophomore capped off her outdoor season with a title at the OVC Championships, throwing a distance of 46.56m, earning first in a field of 13 competitors.
