Women's rugby earned a solid 51-14 win versus the Colorado Gray Wolves Saturday afternoon at Infinity Park Stadium in Glendale, Colorado.
The Lions have been testing themselves this spring as they did again with this match against the WPL squad, which has been an ongoing annual friendly for several years with Lindenwood traveling to face the Gray Wolves on a WPL bye weekend or in this case, the pre-season.
Senior Destiny Arena
The Lions had a very successful first half defensively as they shut out Colorado while putting 27 points on the board. Despite the lopsided score, the Gray Wolves pushed Lindenwood in the attack and did not give up much space with a strong physical effort. Colorado did manage to score 14 points in the second half, but the Lions continued to click on offense and extended their advantage through the final whistle.
Freshman Freda Tafuna lead Lindenwood with 21 points during the contest as the Lions improved to 10-0 overall on the season and extended their first XV's winning streak to 39 games.
Forwards captain
Destiny Arena was happy about the team effort in the match.
"The past few matches we have had some outstanding individual performances, but today we really were firing on all cylinders as a
Freshman Amy Brice
team," she said. "Forwards and backs did a great job of interconnected play and we were able to make some things happen against a strong Colorado team. Excited to take today's lessons and prep for our upcoming semifinal match."
Head Coach
Billy Nicholas was proud of the way his team played.
"They have shown continual improvement over the last few matches and the foot is on the gas now," he said. "Coming away with a win against some fantastic senior club sides the past few weeks is no easy feat. They all enjoy the challenge and we are excited to host the upcoming semifinal at home at Lindenwood. It will be a special opportunity for us."
The Lions will travel to Davenport, Iowa to face Palmer College April 9 at 3 p.m. and then will look forward to hosting Penn State University in the USA Rugby D1 Elite 15's National Championship semifinals April 16. The opening kickoff against the Nittany Lions is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Missouri.
